A four-piece string band featuring some of the most talented pickers in the twin cities, Uncle Kenny performs a tasteful blend of bluegrass, old time, classic country, jazz, and whatever else they want! After a number of shared gigs and informal living room jams, Nate Baker (Daniels & Baker), Rachel Calvert (Barbaro, Triple Fiddle), Willie Christianson (Brotherhood of Birds, Ryan Gebhart), and Mike Hedding (Pistol Whippin’ Party Penguins, The Katey Bellville Band) decided they enjoyed playing together so much, it was time to form a proper band. Combining thoughtful, dynamic arrangements with blistering hot instrumentals and perfectly blended vocal harmonies, Uncle Kenny stays faithful to a traditional sound, with enough twists and turns to keep contemporary audiences on the edge of their seats.

Tapers notes: MetroNOME is fast becoming one of my favorite places to see concerts, it's such an intimate venue, fairly priced, and the artists they bring in are almost always top notch. I check their website every couple weeks to see any new shows that have popped up, and saw this one. I didn't know the name Uncle Kenny, but I recognized the picture of Rachel on their site, as she was a member of Barabaro, a band I had seen a few years back at Rock Bend Folk Festival. I knew her talent, so I figured if she was part of the band it would be worth my time to see them, which it definitely was. This was only their second official show as a band, but you would never know. They played like a group that had been playing together for years, and it ended up being a really fun night. I would recommend anyone in the Twin Cities area who like folk/bluegrass/roots type music to catch an Uncle Kenny show at some point.

As far as the recording, I was really pleased with how this turned out. The first 2 tracks (Intro, Weary Blues) are AUD only as the sound guy must not have patched me in to the soundboard at that point, but from track 3 forward there are no issues.
