Nieves del Norte- A father-and-son acoustic duo delivering traditional Mexican regional Norteño music, blending the accordion and the bajo quinto guitar.

Tapers notes: Part of Lakeside Guitar Festival 2026. This was a really cool collaboration, and according to Erik, the first time they had played together in a public setting. You would never know by listening to this, they sound as if they had been playing together for years. There were a few songs I was able to track down based on translating the lyrics, but unfortunately there were still a few I couldn't figure out. If anyone recognizes them, feel free to let me know, I'd love to fill in those gaps. The intro and outro had some technical issues, Molly Maher (MC) was using a wireless mic and I think that caused some drops out, but during the set I didn't notice anything.

Tapers notes: Great recording here, it's always fun seeing Julia and the band whether it's a Julia show or Bloodline show. The SBD portion was sent to me by Lukaz, which is much appreciated. The High 48s team-up with acclaimed Minnesota singer and songwriter Becky Schlegel, combining their high-energy modern bluegrass sound with Schlegel’s soulful singing and her sophisticated take on three-chords-and-the-truth country songwriting.

“We were Becky fans long before we started the band, but it took us a few years to work up the courage to ask if she had any songs for us,” said the 48s’ fiddler and mandolinist, Eric Christopher. And as it turned out, she did have some songs. Lots of them. The 48s recorded Becky Schlegel’s “Baltimore and Ohio,” which she penned with Nashville songwriter Craig Market, for their 2014 release Great Northern Railroad, and “Christmas Every Day” for 2016’s Holidays with the High 48s.

But each time they picked a song for the record, there were many more gems left on the cutting room floor — not enough room on the album. According to Christopher, “That was our first inkling that there might be more to this collaboration than borrowing a song every couple of years.” So, in the summer of 2023, Becky and the 48s released “Laramie,” their first collaborative single. “Laramie,” a Becky Schlegel original, tells a story of lost love set against the windswept plains of eastern Wyoming. It features Becky on guitar and lead vocals and the multi-talented Kenny Wilson on pedal steel guitar.

Tapers notes: Recording 9 of 9 from Recfest 2026. This closes out RecFest 2026 for me, I did not come back for Sunday. I would have liked to, but I was pretty burnt out due to the previous weekend of shows, and thankfully most of the bands I was interested in played on Saturday, so it worked out ok. Becky Schlegel has become of my favorites...I had seen her in previous years, but really became a super fan of her in 2026, and consider her a friend at this point. It's always a bonus when musicians you admire end up being really good people as well, as is the case with Becky. Looking forward to seeing her at Douglas Saloon again for her winter residency, those shows are always a fun time.

Tapers notes: Recording 5 of 9 from Recfest 2026. It's always great to see Becky and The High 48's, they compliment each other's sound perfectly. This was the first of their two sets, this one was a bit shorter as there was a ceremony honoring the founder of RecFest in between sets. But, they would come back later in the day and close out the night with a longer set.

I really enjoyed this set, lots of classic bluegrass songs with a few more recent ones mixed in. The band is super talented, just really fantastic musicianship, I would encourage any bluegrass fans to give this one a listen.

Tapers notes: Recording 13 of 13 from Muskie Days 2026. The last show of Muskie Days 2026, and this set bled in to the wee hours of the night, in fact it ended around 1 am. We had slept in the car the night before, and I had only gotten about 4 hours of sleep, so by the end of this set I was running on fumes. But, in spite of that, I really enjoyed this set, lots of great jams. A lot of the crowd had left after Corey Medina's set, but the crowd that remained was treated to a great capper to the festival.

In the music of Charlie Parr, there is a sincere conviction and earnest drive to create. The Minnesota-born guitarist, songwriter, and interpreter of traditional music has released 19 albums over two decades and has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows, writing and rewriting songs as he plays, fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. The bluesman poet pulls closely from the sights and sounds around him, his lyrical craftsmanship built by his influences. The sounds from his working-class upbringing—including Folkways legends such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie—imbue Parr’s music with stylistic echoes of blues and folk icons of decades past.

Makwawigwamikwe Marlena Boedigheimer was born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota and is a member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. She began playing the tenor saxophone at age 14. Marlena is primarily focused on making music that embodies concepts of Indigenous Futurism through what many would recognize as “free jazz”. Her projects center around the use of the Ojibwe language, Anishinaabemowin, as well as stories from her relatives and ancestors, aiming to raise awareness of the history of her people and the contemporary Ojibwe world. She has performed and recorded with Mato Wayuhi, The Tewa, and other contemporary Indigenous artists across a variety of genre.

Tapers notes: Recording 8 of 13 from Muskie Days 2026. Now we come to my favorite set of the weekend, and one of my favorite discoveries in a long time. I had never heard the name Pink Marlena before Muskie Days, but when I saw her bio on the Muskie Days website, I had a feeling I would love this set. Part funk, part jazz, part jam band...this band doesn't really fit in to any genre, but somehow makes it work perfectly. Their first song I wasn't quite sure if it was one long improvisation, or multiple songs woven, but whatever it was it made for an incredible ride.

Americana Singer/songwriter from central MN. From the depths of his midwestern roots, Messerole masterfully blends the sounds of his guitar with engaging lyrics, and often a harmonica, to tell gritty American tales that are bound to evoke emotion from all of his listeners. The motifs of his songs can vary as greatly as the wild flowers in the native tall grass. Messerole does frequently write about that flora, as well as the fauna of the region. Not to mention all of it's wild life. Not one to shy away from subject matter, the songs can frequently meander across the lines between love and loss, success and failure, or life and death. Jordan has garnered awards and distinctions that have landed him in the same company as John Prine, Jason Isbell, and John Hiatt. Fans of the aforementioned artists will find satisfaction in his songs as well. Messerole is happy to share his original folk, blues, and alternative country music that's cultivated right here in the heart of the Great Plains.

Tapers notes: Recording 6 of 13 from Muskie Days 2026. Day 2 of Muskie Days began with a great singer-songwriter, Jordan Messerole. I hadn't heard the name before, but I really enjoyed his music and lyrics. As soon as I heard his voice, it reminded me of Canadian musician William Prince, and I loved it immediately. If you aren't familiar with Jordan, I would definitely recommend looking his music up on any streaming site.
