-Tiana Spotted Thunder is a Lakota recording artist from Oglala, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. She is a vocalist of many genres, but specializes in singing traditional Lakota and indigenous music. She travels throughout North America to powwows as a backup singer for drum groups as well as performing solo for various audiences. Her vocal range reveals the pride of her identity as a Lakota woman.
-Tufawon (2 for 1) is a Dakota/Boricua singer, songwriter, producer, and teaching artist from Minneapolis. His name represents his mixed identity, and his music is an honest reflection of his life experiences, personal struggles, his hopes and dreams for the future, spirituality, connectedness to the land, love, and the realities of the world. Musically, he creates a broad spectrum of styles including Hip Hop, RnB, Dancehall, Reggaeton, and Afrobeats. He has put his life on the line to protect the water and our planet thru protest and community organizing. Not only is he dedicated to making music at the highest quality, he is an active youth worker, teaching what he knows and setting the bar high for the next generation of songwriters.

MC's:
-Deanna StandingCloud is a mom, playwright, organizer, artist, community leader, pow-wow emcee, and advocate for Indigenous people. A member of the Red Lake Nation, an Anishinaabe or Ojibwe tribe, StandingCloud’s role as an emcee is just one aspect of a life that intertwines both tradition and modernity. She found her calling in weaving words and telling stories, unlike the rest of her family who are more gifted in the visual arts. She studies Ojibwe, the Anishinaabe language, writes plays for New Native Theatre in St. Paul, and performs as a stand-up comedian. As a leader and connector within her community, she uses humor and storytelling to share her culture and break Native stereotypes. She hopes to pass down a love of her culture to her children, while also leaving a legacy of a powerful Anishinaabe woman.
-Trish Cook is a Red Laker with deep roots in South Minneapolis. She has been entertaining audiences for years with her humor and expressive storytelling. In addition to her individual performances Trish was a third of the nationally recognized Ojibwe Comedy Trio, NDN Way Comedy and is currently focused on kwe comedy with Ace BAE Comedy! Big Auntie Energy Comedy!

Our friends at KFAI Community Radio (90.3FM) turn 47 this year and we’re helping them celebrate by throwing a free party. The station went on the air in 1978 with studios located in Walker Church and has been the voice of our community ever since. For their birthday celebration, they have curated an entertaining evening of music and fun.
KFAI’s MinneCulture presents Live from Minnesota: Turtle Island Voices Rising. Celebrating Minnesota American Indian Month with hosts Deanna StandingCloud and Trish Cook and performances by Tufawon and Tiana Spotted Thunder.

Tapers notes: I saw this show pop up on the Hook and Ladder newsletter and thought it looked interesting. I wasn't familiar with either of the two musicians, but I figured since it was a free show, why not? It ended up being a really fun night, and both Tianna and Tufawon were great, very talented. I always like sharing stuff that opens people up to new types of music, and this is no exception.
