Singer, rapper and writer Dessa has made a career of bucking genres and defying expectations. Her résumé as a musician includes performances at Lollapalooza and Glastonbury, co-compositions for a 100-voice choir and performances with the Minnesota Orchestra that include a live recording slated for release in fall of 2019. Her newest full-length record, Chime, charted on the Billboard Top 200 and debuted at No. 9 on the Alternative charts. Her track “Congratulations” from the multiplatinum album The Hamilton Mixtape has notched more than 10 million streams. As a writer, she’s been featured in The New York Times and broadcast by Minnesota Public Radio, and has published a hardcover collection of essays that NPR and Amazon recognized as a best book of 2018. On the stage and on the page, her style is defined by ferocity, wit, tenderness and candor.

"In partnership with the Jerome Foundation, The Cedar has commissioned seven local artists to compose, practice, and perform new music pieces in collaboration with other local musicians. This project drives The Cedar's vision to support emerging artists.
