Saltydog is a funk jam Improvisational exploration that takes the audience & band on a journey through their playfully crafted folk driven tunes inspired by the likes of everyone from The Talking Heads, The Band, those classic country and jam band staples along with everyone in between. The band spawned on the banks of Duluth’s ice covered stones by brothers Jacob and Owen Mahon. This midwestern psychedelic cowboy review features Calvin (Calzone) Lund, Lefty Johnson, Gavin St. Clair, and Sam Deters.

Tapers notes: It's always fun seeing these guys, and the recording here is great. Towards the end of the show there was a duck that flew in and almost hit the glass at the back of the bandshell, but luckily stopped just in time. It then tried to get through a smaller window at the bottom of the bandhsell that was halfway open, and finally succeeded. You can hear the band comment on it and the crowd reaction to it as well.

Out of the north midwest and the banks of the mighty Mississippi River grew this “Groovy Grass” band of music makers. High & Rising most often plays as a quartet, with a unique combination of instruments that bring a fresh groovy sound to the Bluegrass & Folk Americana scene.

The band, led by Laura Farley (upright bass/vocals) and supported by Jym Farley (acoustic guitar), Ben Rohde (percussion) and Harrison Olk (Banjo) have quickly made a name for themselves through their prolific songwriting and performances along-side many notable musicians in the upper midwest music scene.

High & Rising has released two full-length albums: their critically-acclaimed debut album Howl and the most recent tribute to the Grateful Dead.

Tapers notes: I was hoping for this to be a Matrix recording, but the soundboard portion didn't work out. The audio here is heavy on the reverb, and the soundboard recording was even heavier, so it was unusable. The final recording is of average quality, but listenable, and a great setlist makes it worth the time IMO.

Samantha Crain is a Choctaw-American singer, songwriter, film composer, and producer from Oklahoma. A two-time winner of the Native American Music Award, Samantha defies categorization, marrying folk music with the sounds of country rock and college indie. Samantha's latest album, A Small Death (2020), was released on Communion's Real Kind Records. The album received universal acclaim with tracks finding themselves in constant rotation on 6music.

Samantha has toured extensively over the past decade nationally and internationally, presenting ambitious orchestrated shows with her band as well as intimate folk-leaning solo performances. She has toured with First Aid Kit, Neutral Milk Hotel, Lucy Rose, The Avett Brothers, The Mountain Goats, and many others.

Tapers notes: Some musicians create great music, some create important music, and very few create both. In my mind, Samantha Crain is one of those musicians, her lyrics always strike a chord, and stick with me long after I've listened to them. This was the first time I've seen her with a band, the previous few times I've seen her were solo appearances, so I was excited for a different type of experience. The show went above and beyond expectations, and I enjoyed listening back to it while mastering it. The opener was someone I was unfamiliar with, but I enjoyed their set as well. The sound here is great, one thing about a musician like Samantha is you aren't going to get many talkers because they are so focused on her, and it makes for a much more pleasant listening experience.

-Tiana Spotted Thunder is a Lakota recording artist from Oglala, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. She is a vocalist of many genres, but specializes in singing traditional Lakota and indigenous music. She travels throughout North America to powwows as a backup singer for drum groups as well as performing solo for various audiences. Her vocal range reveals the pride of her identity as a Lakota woman.

-Tufawon (2 for 1) is a Dakota/Boricua singer, songwriter, producer, and teaching artist from Minneapolis. His name represents his mixed identity, and his music is an honest reflection of his life experiences, personal struggles, his hopes and dreams for the future, spirituality, connectedness to the land, love, and the realities of the world. Musically, he creates a broad spectrum of styles including Hip Hop, RnB, Dancehall, Reggaeton, and Afrobeats. He has put his life on the line to protect the water and our planet thru protest and community organizing. Not only is he dedicated to making music at the highest quality, he is an active youth worker, teaching what he knows and setting the bar high for the next generation of songwriters.

MC's:

-Deanna StandingCloud is a mom, playwright, organizer, artist, community leader, pow-wow emcee, and advocate for Indigenous people. A member of the Red Lake Nation, an Anishinaabe or Ojibwe tribe, StandingCloud’s role as an emcee is just one aspect of a life that intertwines both tradition and modernity. She found her calling in weaving words and telling stories, unlike the rest of her family who are more gifted in the visual arts. She studies Ojibwe, the Anishinaabe language, writes plays for New Native Theatre in St. Paul, and performs as a stand-up comedian. As a leader and connector within her community, she uses humor and storytelling to share her culture and break Native stereotypes. She hopes to pass down a love of her culture to her children, while also leaving a legacy of a powerful Anishinaabe woman.

-Trish Cook is a Red Laker with deep roots in South Minneapolis. She has been entertaining audiences for years with her humor and expressive storytelling. In addition to her individual performances Trish was a third of the nationally recognized Ojibwe Comedy Trio, NDN Way Comedy and is currently focused on kwe comedy with Ace BAE Comedy! Big Auntie Energy Comedy!

Our friends at KFAI Community Radio (90.3FM) turn 47 this year and we’re helping them celebrate by throwing a free party. The station went on the air in 1978 with studios located in Walker Church and has been the voice of our community ever since. For their birthday celebration, they have curated an entertaining evening of music and fun.

KFAI’s MinneCulture presents Live from Minnesota: Turtle Island Voices Rising. Celebrating Minnesota American Indian Month with hosts Deanna StandingCloud and Trish Cook and performances by Tufawon and Tiana Spotted Thunder.

Tapers notes: I saw this show pop up on the Hook and Ladder newsletter and thought it looked interesting. I wasn't familiar with either of the two musicians, but I figured since it was a free show, why not? It ended up being a really fun night, and both Tianna and Tufawon were great, very talented. I always like sharing stuff that opens people up to new types of music, and this is no exception.

The Hook & Ladder Theater is very proud to present a very special event celebrating the 98 year-old birthday of legendary twin-city performer, James Samuel ‘Cornbread’ Harris Sr., his band of Friends and some very special guests!

Tapers notes: This was a fun night, I wasn't anticipating seeing Cornbread and his son on the stage together, so it was a pleasant surprise. As always, Cornbread puts on a great show, and doesn't seem to be slowing down at all as he nears 100 years old. Here's to hoping I'll be posting his 100th birthday part extravaganza in a couple years!

The band has been known as differently original, very funky, and unpredictable in a delightful, soulful manner. There is something for everyone at a Saltydog show. You are beautiful, you are welcome, you will groove, we will vibe. We are Saltydog.

Tapers notes: I always try my best to fill out every title I can in a setlist, but as you can see, I struggled with quite a few of them. I hate leaving it like that, but I just didn't recognize them, so it is what it is. Decent recording, a few shouters in between songs, but that's about it. It's always fun seeing these guys, this was the last show of a month long residency, hopefully they make their way down to the cities again.

The Hook and Ladder Theater is proud to again host this very special, intimate Holiday Blues Show with the one and only Cornbread Harris and Friends on Thursday, December 12th at The Hook and Ladder Theater.

James Samuel “Cornbread” Harris, Sr. (born April 23, 1927) is an American musician and Twin Cities legend. The Cornbread, as he often refers to himself, has been playing blues, boogie-woogie and rock n roll piano for Twin Cities audiences for decades…roughly 7 of them now. Yes, Cornbread opened for The King (Elvis). Yes, a young Cornbread appeared on MN’s first recorded rock & roll record (with Augie Garcia). Yes, Cornbread has been the recipient of numerous prestigious (Blues Hall of Fame, Sally Award, etc.) recognitions. Yes, Cornbread is Jimmy Jam’s dad.

But, the fact that Cornbread still holds down weekly and monthly gigs across the Twin Cities at restaurants like The Loring Pasta Bar and Hells Kitchen, as well as playing local music venues, weddings, churches, old folks homes and private events as often as he can, is what might just make him the most special artist in our artist-rich community.

Please join us as we celebrate the holidays with a 97 year old living legend, James Samuel ‘Cornbread’ Harris, Sr.

**************************
Tapers notes: This was Cornbread's annual Christmas show, so there's a few Christmas songs sprinkled in through the set. Him being 97 years of age, I always appreciate being able to see Cornbread, and hopefully will be able to for at least a few more years still.

KFW also put their own stamp on hits and deep cuts by Patsy Cline, Barbara Mandrell, LaVern Baker, and Johnny Cash.

Tapers notes: I've always loved 50's and 60's era rockabilly, and this band covers a lot of that ground, so it was a fun night for me. Sound on this one is ok, there is quite a bit of hiss from the SBD recording as the output was really low. It's mostly noticeable in quieter parts, and doesn't detract from the music in my opinion. This was the night before Halloween, so there was a costume contest in between track 11 and 12 in set 2, so there is a fade out and fade back in at that point.

Tapers notes: This was the bands Twin Cities debut, so there was no doubt I was going to be there to support them. They did not disappoint, and there were already people asking when they were coming back after the show. There are a couple audio issues with this recording, I didn't get a SBD feed until about 1:45 in to the first song, so up until it's just AUD only. There are also a few glitches from the SBD feed, I got the impression that the person running sound wasn't the regular sound person there. But, I definitely appreciate what I got, and for the most part the sound is great.

The Hook & Ladder Theater is very proud to present a very special concert event celebrating the 97 year-old birthday of legendary twin-city performer, James Samuel ‘Cornbread’ Harris Sr., his band of Friends and some very special guests!

Tapers notes: Always great seeing Cornbread, he's still going strong, sounding as good as ever. I would highly recommend anyone who hasn't seen him yet, make it a point to before it's too late. Not often you get to see a living legend at 97 still out there playing shows.

Tapers notes: 2nd night in a row of seeing Wayne, definitely a fuller crowd this night. Some of the same songs as the previous night, but a few different ones as well. I was able to get a SBD feed for this show, but the mix was not great. The vocals were so far down in the mix and the electric guitar was so up front it was almost impossible to listen to. Definitely a bummer, but thankfully I was running both SBD and audio for this show, and this recording sounds pretty decent.

Electric Fetus is excited to have Charlie Parr return to our stage for an in-store performance on Wednesday, March 6th at 5:00pm. Following his performance, Charlie will sign copies of his forthcoming CD and LP, Little Sun. Little Sun won't be released until March 22nd, but we're able to have it for sale early at this event, thanks to our friends at Smithsonian Folkways. No passes are needed for this event.

More about Little Sun:

Over the last couple of decades, Charlie Parr has crisscrossed the world on tour more times than one can count. He also has released over a dozen albums of his songs, acclaimed for their poetic simplicity. Little Sun, his most ambitious album to date, was recorded with Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, My Morning Jacket) and features Parr augmenting his raw and affecting songs with stunning full-band arrangements. The remarkable backing band here includes Marisa Anderson, Victor Krummenacher, Andrew Borger, and Asher Fulero. Masterfully channeling the philosophical and transcendental qualities of the blues, Parr takes us on a journey through the winding streets of his imagination.

**************************
Tapers notes: This was supposed to be a Matrix recording, but the SBD portion sounded so distant and echoey it wasn't worth including. I think the sound guy plugged me into a mic that was off stage for announcements before and after the show, that's about the only thing I can think of. But, that being said, this is still a good recording, no real flaws to speak of. As always, check the samples and judge for yourself. Also, be sure to check out Charlie's new album that comes out on March 22nd, it's quality as always.

Konrad Wert is a man of many voices. As a special education teacher, he is articulate and intentional. As an advocate for justice in education, he is passionate. But as an artist and musician, better known by his stage name Possessed By Paul James, his voice is expressive, holding rest and action in tandem. In truth, "Paul James" is a fiction, a combination of the names of Wert's father and grandfather. Those who have seen him perform, however, would agree he seems possessed by something. Wert has still been able to release 5 full length albums, two of which topped Bluegrass Billboard charts in 2013 & 2020. Possessed by Paul James’s upcoming 6th album, titled Fighting For Our Own Survival, set to release "sooner than later".

As the great-grandson of Hank Williams Sr., grandson of Hank Williams Jr., and only son of Hank 3, Coleman Williams spent years waging an internal battle with the expectations thrust upon him by his own lineage. He represented the fourth generation of country music's most legendary family — hence his nickname, "IV" — and the pressure to launch his own career was enormous. Although Coleman would eventually make his mark with Southern Circus — the genre-bending debut from his band, IV and The Strange Band, combining southern storytelling and country textures with 100-watt guitar amps and DIY attitude — he needed to break free first and discover his own musical approach along the way. Southern Circus is his homecoming: an album that finds him not falling into a legacy, but earning it.

Tapers notes: Pretty good sound on this recording, no real flaws to speak of. I had never heard of Pine & Fire before this show, but was really impressed by them. Coleman & the band were great as always, playing a variety of genres throughout the set.

Tiny Tuesdays! Music tolerable to the naked ear. Where the sets are short, and the night ends early. This is a recurring monthly music series, with 5 performers per night doing 12 minutes or less each.

Tapers notes: I was requested to record this night, and I was more than happy to step in. I was familiar with Pat Keen, but all the other artists were unfamilar to me. A lot of these were improvisational songs/sets, so I wasn't able to title them, but there were a few songs I was able to identify.

4. To Make You Sing
5. My Heart Plays the Villian (w/ Amy Leerae)
6. I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) (The Proclaimers cover)

The Minneapolis-based guitar-blazing, soul-singing songwriter, Ry Edwards, sings about work, daydreaming, love, parenting, depression, and hope over rock chords that move like jazz. His songs tell stories through emotive riffs and descriptions so vivid you might even believe they're about you. Raised on the heavily nuanced music of 60s pop, Ry's music steals from the rhythms of Motown, the 7th chords of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, and the tenderness of the gentle and catchy ballads of the Everly Brothers and James Taylor. Yet the strongest influence comes from Ry's musical awakening when he encountered the emotional explosions of 90s Grunge Rock bands: The Smashing Pumpkins, Soul Asylum, Collective Soul, Stone Temple Pilots, Green Day, Soundgarden, The Offspring, and early Radiohead. The passion portrayed in songs like "Tonight, Tonight", "Self-Esteem", and "Fake Plastic Trees" comes through in Edwards' songs like "Ready to Wash", "Dominoes", and "Sparrow" off of his forthcoming "Sojourn Through the Night" album due out in summer of 2023.

Sometimes the pursuit of our greater humanity involves jumping into life head first. That’s what McKain Lakey does. You can tell by her songs.

Armed with George the trusty road cat, a carful of instruments, and all the fight of a rambling, rural-raised, queer femme wanderer, McKain Lakey is one to be reckoned with. She’s the rare human who feels as comfortable wielding a chisel as she does a guitar, who can be as often spotted behind the soundboard in a crowded venue as discussing the intersections of race and gender in old time music with a classroom full of 5th graders.

Described by What’s Up Magazine as “a time capsule unearthed, fine-tuned and re-imagined”, Lakey draws creative inspiration from far corners of the American music tradition, tracing the lines of musical lineage that connect Old Time to Rockabilly, Country to Cajun to Dixieland. She’s a dedicated student of tradition, but at once unafraid to stare down convention through the modern lens of her lived experience. Her 2021 album, Somewhere, blurs lines of old and new, referencing musical textures of past eras while unabashedly exploring topics of mental health, family separation, rural identity and queer love.

“My introduction to American folk music was so rooted in the knowledge that I am a part of living tradition, a web connected across time and distance, and built by generations of creative and resilient people.” -McKain Lakey

Inspired by the crystalline chill of the north country she calls home in Minnesota, Humbird combines a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale. Humbird’s music moves between experimental folk and environmental Americana to embrace the unexpected. The music invites a refreshing dissonance into the house. It leaves bread crumbs along the path and reflects light back at the stars.

Siri Undlin witnessed the power of storytelling in her childhood home and began writing music and performing in church choirs and in Irish ensembles from a young age. Her voice, which contains the unwavering fortitude of hymnal melodies, reveals her traditional background.

In 2019, Humbird released the critically acclaimed, debut full-length, Pharmakon, which introduced us to Humbird’s songcraft and harmonic folk style. With Folk Alley calling the album “... an absolutely hypnotic listening experience.” Atwood Magazine described it as music wrapped in “gentle rebellion”. The release garnered millions of online streams and a wide range of accolades, including 89.3FM The Current’s “Best Local Albums Of The Year”, one of City Page’s “Picked To Click” Awards, “Best Minnesota Albums” from the Star Tribune, and as an official showcasing artist at SXSW in Austin.

Most recently, the material on Humbird’s sophomore record Still Life (October 2021) has already received enthusiastic praise from within the folk world – awarded as one of Kerrville Folk Fest’s New Folk winners for 2021.

Tapers notes: Was hoping to get a SBD feed as Siri has been open to taping anytime I've asked, but I wasn't able to get one, so an audience recording had to do. Thankfully, The Icehouse is a small, intimate venue and a great place for recording and this one turned out well. I wasn't familiar with the opener, but McKain ended up being a treat, and well worth a listen. This show was originally supposed to take place in December, but Siri lost her voice the day before and it had to be re-scheduled.

Jeffrey M. Kelly has been a songwriter and musician for a number of years and Jenna has always had an ear for harmonies. Combining their strengths they picked up the guitar and banjo and started writing and sharing songs about love and longing.
