Tapers notes: My recorder shut off for some reason at some point during set 2, but thankfully I was recording video and was able to patch the missing audio with that. I was missing about the last 25 minutes of the show, so at the start of "The Cornbread Song" there is a difference in audio for the rest of the show. Unfortunate, but I tried to make the best of it, and I'm still not sure why my recorder died, I've been running a lot of tests since. This is an otherwise great recording, the show was great, always cool to see Cornbread and his son share the stage. Here's to hoping I'll see Cornbread next year at the 100th birthday extravaganza.

The Hook and Ladder Theater is proud to again host this very special, intimate Holiday Blues Show with the one and only Cornbread Harris and Friends on Thursday, December 18th at The Hook and Ladder Theater.

James Samuel “Cornbread” Harris, Sr. (born April 23, 1927) is an American musician and Twin Cities legend. The Cornbread, as he often refers to himself, has been playing blues, boogie-woogie and rock n roll piano for Twin Cities audiences for decades…roughly 7 of them now. Yes, Cornbread opened for The King (Elvis). Yes, a young Cornbread appeared on MN’s first recorded rock & roll record (with Augie Garcia). Yes, Cornbread has been the recipient of numerous prestigious (Blues Hall of Fame, Sally Award, etc.) recognitions. Yes, Cornbread is Jimmy Jam’s dad.

But, the fact that Cornbread still holds down weekly and monthly gigs across the Twin Cities at restaurants like The Loring Pasta Bar and Hells Kitchen, as well as playing local music venues, weddings, churches, old folks homes and private events as often as he can, is what might just make him the most special artist in our artist-rich community.

-Tiana Spotted Thunder is a Lakota recording artist from Oglala, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. She is a vocalist of many genres, but specializes in singing traditional Lakota and indigenous music. She travels throughout North America to powwows as a backup singer for drum groups as well as performing solo for various audiences. Her vocal range reveals the pride of her identity as a Lakota woman.

-Tufawon (2 for 1) is a Dakota/Boricua singer, songwriter, producer, and teaching artist from Minneapolis. His name represents his mixed identity, and his music is an honest reflection of his life experiences, personal struggles, his hopes and dreams for the future, spirituality, connectedness to the land, love, and the realities of the world. Musically, he creates a broad spectrum of styles including Hip Hop, RnB, Dancehall, Reggaeton, and Afrobeats. He has put his life on the line to protect the water and our planet thru protest and community organizing. Not only is he dedicated to making music at the highest quality, he is an active youth worker, teaching what he knows and setting the bar high for the next generation of songwriters.

**************************
MC's:

-Deanna StandingCloud is a mom, playwright, organizer, artist, community leader, pow-wow emcee, and advocate for Indigenous people. A member of the Red Lake Nation, an Anishinaabe or Ojibwe tribe, StandingCloud’s role as an emcee is just one aspect of a life that intertwines both tradition and modernity. She found her calling in weaving words and telling stories, unlike the rest of her family who are more gifted in the visual arts. She studies Ojibwe, the Anishinaabe language, writes plays for New Native Theatre in St. Paul, and performs as a stand-up comedian. As a leader and connector within her community, she uses humor and storytelling to share her culture and break Native stereotypes. She hopes to pass down a love of her culture to her children, while also leaving a legacy of a powerful Anishinaabe woman.

-Trish Cook is a Red Laker with deep roots in South Minneapolis. She has been entertaining audiences for years with her humor and expressive storytelling. In addition to her individual performances Trish was a third of the nationally recognized Ojibwe Comedy Trio, NDN Way Comedy and is currently focused on kwe comedy with Ace BAE Comedy! Big Auntie Energy Comedy!

Our friends at KFAI Community Radio (90.3FM) turn 47 this year and we’re helping them celebrate by throwing a free party. The station went on the air in 1978 with studios located in Walker Church and has been the voice of our community ever since. For their birthday celebration, they have curated an entertaining evening of music and fun.

KFAI’s MinneCulture presents Live from Minnesota: Turtle Island Voices Rising. Celebrating Minnesota American Indian Month with hosts Deanna StandingCloud and Trish Cook and performances by Tufawon and Tiana Spotted Thunder.

Tapers notes: I saw this show pop up on the Hook and Ladder newsletter and thought it looked interesting. I wasn't familiar with either of the two musicians, but I figured since it was a free show, why not? It ended up being a really fun night, and both Tianna and Tufawon were great, very talented. I always like sharing stuff that opens people up to new types of music, and this is no exception.

Tapers notes: This was a fun night, I wasn't anticipating seeing Cornbread and his son on the stage together, so it was a pleasant surprise. Here's to hoping I'll be posting his 100th birthday part extravaganza in a couple years!

Saltydog is a funk jam Improvisational exploration that takes the audience & band on a journey through their playfully crafted folk driven tunes inspired by the likes of everyone from The Talking Heads, The Band, those classic country and jam band staples along with everyone in between.

The band spawned on the banks of Duluth’s ice covered stones by brothers Jacob and Owen Mahon. This midwestern psychedelic cowboy review features Calvin (Calzone) Lund, Lefty Johnson, Gavin St. Clair, and Sam Deters.

The band’s genuine kindness, passion, enthusiasm and joy for their craft is apparent, enchanting & makes for an additive live performance. Their 2nd album Pepper dropped spring 2024 band is set to release their 3rd album in Spring 2025. The band has been known as differently original, very funky, and unpredictable in a delightful, soulful manner. There is something for everyone at a Saltydog show. You are beautiful, you are welcome, you will groove, we will vibe. We are Saltydog.

Tapers notes: Decent recording, a few shouters in between songs, but that's about it. It's always fun seeing these guys, this was the last show of a month long residency, hopefully they make their way down to the cities again.

Tapers notes: 2nd night in a row of seeing Wayne, definitely a fuller crowd this night. Some of the same songs as the previous night, but a few different ones as well. I was able to get a SBD feed for this show, but the mix was not great. The vocals were so far down in the mix and the electric guitar was so up front it was almost impossible to listen to. Definitely a bummer, but thankfully I was running both SBD and audio for this show, and this recording sounds pretty decent.

As the great-grandson of Hank Williams Sr., grandson of Hank Williams Jr., and only son of Hank 3, Coleman Williams spent years waging an internal battle with the expectations thrust upon him by his own lineage. He represented the fourth generation of country music’s most legendary family — hence his nickname, “IV” — and the pressure to launch his own career was enormous. Although Coleman would eventually make his mark with Southern Circus — the genre-bending debut from his band, IV and The Strange Band, combining southern storytelling and country textures with 100-watt guitar amps and DIY attitude — he needed to break free first and discover his own musical approach along the way. Southern Circus is his homecoming: an album that finds him not falling into a legacy, but earning it.

“Pieta Brown is a major talent. Her artistry combines folk, country, and dusky swamp in a graceful, supple, and elegant genre of their own.” ~ American Songwriter

Righteous Babe Recording artist and indie folk songstress, hailed as a “self-styled poetess, folk goddess and country waif”, has been recognized by NPR for her “moody, ethereal” songwriting and applauded by The Boston Globe for her “mercurial voice”, joins us for the release of her new album.

Brown has gained wide-spread critical attention for both her singing and songwriting. The Wall Street Journal and American Songwriter, and Amazon have included her albums in year-end, ‘best-of’ picks. So far in her career, she has shared stages with icons like Emmylou Harris and JJ Cale to Neko Case and Richard Thompson. Fiercely independent, she has received praise and support from many of her fellow artists and mentors – Justin Vernon, Iris Dement, Mark Knopfler, Amos Lee, producer Don Was, and film-maker Wim Wenders.
