In the music of Charlie Parr, there is a sincere conviction and earnest drive to create. The Minnesota-born guitarist, songwriter, and interpreter of traditional music has released 19 albums over two decades and has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows, writing and rewriting songs as he plays, fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. The bluesman poet pulls closely from the sights and sounds around him, his lyrical craftsmanship built by his influences. The sounds from his working-class upbringing—including Folkways legends such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie—imbue Parr’s music with stylistic echoes of blues and folk icons of decades past.

Electric Fetus is excited to have Charlie Parr return to our stage for an in-store performance on Wednesday, March 6th at 5:00pm. Following his performance, Charlie will sign copies of his forthcoming CD and LP, Little Sun. Little Sun won't be released until March 22nd, but we're able to have it for sale early at this event, thanks to our friends at Smithsonian Folkways. No passes are needed for this event.

More about Little Sun:

Over the last couple of decades, Charlie Parr has crisscrossed the world on tour more times than one can count. He also has released over a dozen albums of his songs, acclaimed for their poetic simplicity. Little Sun, his most ambitious album to date, was recorded with Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, My Morning Jacket) and features Parr augmenting his raw and affecting songs with stunning full-band arrangements. The remarkable backing band here includes Marisa Anderson, Victor Krummenacher, Andrew Borger, and Asher Fulero. Masterfully channeling the philosophical and transcendental qualities of the blues, Parr takes us on a journey through the winding streets of his imagination.

Tapers notes: This was supposed to be a Matrix recording, but the SBD portion sounded so distant and echoey it wasn't worth including. I think the sound guy plugged me into a mic that was off stage for announcements before and after the show, that's about the only thing I can think of. But, that being said, this is still a good recording, no real flaws to speak of. As always, check the samples and judge for yourself. Also, be sure to check out Charlie's new album that comes out on March 22nd, it's quality as always.

Charlie Parr is an incorruptible outsider who writes novelistic, multi-layered stories that shine a kaleidoscopic light on defiant, unseen characters thriving in the shadows all around us. Parr has a new record with only his name on it, and it isn’t shiny and perfect and commercial and catchy. It’s him. It’s pure Charlie Parr and that’s enough. He hasn’t moved to LA or Nashville; he’s stayed in the cold grey north of Minnesota, because that’s his home.

An easily confused and very shy individual, Charlie Parr has been traveling around singing his songs ever since leaving Austin Minnesota in the 1980’s in search of Spider John Koerner, whom he found about 100 miles north at the Viking Bar one Sunday night. The experience changed his life, made him more or less unemployable, and brings us to now: 13 recordings, 250 shows a year or more, 200,000 miles on a well broke in Kia, and a nasty fear of heights. Resonator fueled folk songs from Duluth Minnesota.

**************************
Tapers notes: As always, a great show from Charlie. This was the first of 3 Charlie shows I saw in the span of 8 days, so if you are a Charlie Parr fan I have a couple more recordings on the way.

Combining a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale, Humbird stretches between experimental folk and environmental Americana to embrace the unexpected. This music invites a refreshing dissonance into the house, it leaves breadcrumbs along the path and reflects light back at the stars.

Bluesman Charlie Parr is headed out on a European tour in May so before he goes Duluth wants to give him a big send off.

Charlie is touring behind his 14th studio album "Last of the Better Days Ahead" which includes stops all over the world. Over the years, Charlie has performed in legendary venues like Newport Folk Festival, The Kennedy Center, The Troubadour, and Bowery Ballroom. But he hasn’t moved to LA or Nashville; he’s stayed in the cold grey north of Duluth, Minnesota, because that’s his home.

Supporting this show will be Minneapolis singer/songwriter Humbird.

Good luck in Europe, Charlie! We'll be here when you get back!

**************************
Tapers notes: To say this recording is a disappointment would be an understatement. This was my first attempt with external mics, and unfortunately it didn't go well. The Humbird set worked fine, although a little distant, but the Charlie Parr set was another story. The first ten minutes or so went fine, but after that the left mic went dead, and the rest of the show was only recorded on the right mic. The best solution I could think of here was to copy the right channel and paste it to the left, creating basically a mono recording. The sound isn't great, and the mics were returned the next day. I did try a different pair of mics a few weeks later, but those ended up being damaged, so I took it as a sign to stop the external mic experiment (for now), and stick what works. I may try again down the road once I am in a better financial situation, but I am content with what I am getting with my internal mics. This was a great show, but unfortunately not a great recording. As always, listen to the sample provided and judge for yourself if it's worth the download.

Authentic gets used way too much, but when you hear Charlie you'll understand its meaning. Charlie shows up with his lived-in rasp of a voice, a National Resonator guitar, a twelve string acoustic, a banjo, a batch of his own songs, and well-traveled numbers by revered bluesmen from other times. He executes his music the way it should be with a self-taught mix of slide, finger-picking, quasi-frailing techniques, and a voice that says, "this is the blues". Charlie Parr is the real deal. We’re not pulling your leg. But don’t take our word for it... listen to his music. You’ll be glad you did. Always a sold out show at Oak Center, get your tickets early!

Taper's notes: During "Cheap Wine", one of the dogs that kind of roam during the show felt the call of "nature" during song, right in front of the stage basically, so you'll hear Charlie's commentary during the song about that, as well the cleanup by the venue owner during the next song.

Outdoor concert at a block party type setting, as well as some rude (and drunk) neighbors, so unfortunately a noisy recording.
