Presenting some of the finest northland music makers, Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold will host their 3rd Annual Songwriter Showcase at 7 pm Saturday, March 23 on the beautiful Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage.

This one-time-only event features three singer-songwriters performing a solo set of their original music for a live audience, discussing the craft of songwriting, and sharing stories that inspire their music. Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold will conclude the night with a full band performance.

2024 featured artists are: Shane Nelson, Hannah Rey and Skarlett Woods.

Frank said the inspiration for this event emerged in part by reflecting on his own journey as a singer songwriter, and in part through his admiration of the multitude of gifted songwriters and performers in the Twin Ports area.

“Songwriting lives at the heart of all music, regardless of genre or instrumentation. It is a process of self-reflection and storytelling mixed with creative melodic expression," said Frank. "I have always been amazed at the sheer number of musicians in the Duluth area who write and perform their own original music. Many of these people are my dear friends, and comprise a beautiful, passionate, and supportive community. My vision for this event is to showcase a small fraction of that talent by highlighting some singer-songwriters who are pillars of this community, and who have inspired my own craft.”

Tapers notes: Every year I seem to pick up a new annual tradition when it comes to concerts/fesitvals, and this is one of them I attended last year for the first time and I will continue going to as long as Danny puts it on. I was very familiar with Skarlett going in to the night, I knew Shane's name but wasn't familar with his music, and Hannah was completely new to me. Danny just has an ear for picking out great talent for this showcase, because they were all excellent and gained new fans that night. I would encourage anyone to listen to the 3 artists from the first set, and to check out Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold's new live album (from last years showcase) available on all streaming platforms. I was hoping to get a SBD feed for this, but it was being broadcast on YouTube so all their inputs were being used. Sound is pretty good here, the venue tends to have some echo, but I've figured out sitting in the lower part of the venue cuts down a lot on that.

The Minneapolis-based guitar-blazing, soul-singing songwriter, Ry Edwards, sings about work, daydreaming, love, parenting, depression, and hope over rock chords that move like jazz. His songs tell stories through emotive riffs and descriptions so vivid you might even believe they're about you. Raised on the heavily nuanced music of 60s pop, Ry's music steals from the rhythms of Motown, the 7th chords of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, and the tenderness of the gentle and catchy ballads of the Everly Brothers and James Taylor. Yet the strongest influence comes from Ry's musical awakening when he encountered the emotional explosions of 90s Grunge Rock bands: The Smashing Pumpkins, Soul Asylum, Collective Soul, Stone Temple Pilots, Green Day, Soundgarden, The Offspring, and early Radiohead. Emerging Indie artist, Skarlett Woods, has won or been nominated for countless folk awards in the nation. She has been described as the child of Joni Mitchell and KD Lang. Skarlett has opened for such acts as Stephen Stills, Judy Collins and the Blues Traveler.

While the exquisite- voiced singer/songwriter has influence from a family steeped in show tunes, her Americana-Jazz style is what captivates audiences.

Filling her shows with stories of falling in love, being employed in the Crab Boat industry, a 6,000 mile bike ride and performing all over Oregon and California collecting tales from the West, Skarlett has produced a body of work that remains truly and entirely unto itself.

Tapers notes: Decent sound on this one, I was able to set my recorder right up against the speaker. There are a few songs where the sound is a little hot, which caused some distortion, but it's still pretty listenable through those points. I was hopeful to get a SBD recording of this show, but her board had a different connection than I was prepared for, so I had to settle for this.

Singer songwriter Skarlett Woods will perform her latest work and talk about her life in music during

our next “Live from The Heart” Songwriters/Storytellers live stream at 7:30 pm Tuesday, March 21 on the Sacred Heart YouTube channel. Karen Sunderman will host.

Known to mix mesmerizing vocal work with a 7-string guitar groove far beyond your average singer/songwriter, Skarlett Woods brings her unique folk and West Coast jazz to the same dinner table.

Wood blends swing and jazz into folk-themed stories of love and has a stage presence that demands the attention of a room. Taking her listeners on up-beat rhythmic rides over heart- swelling arrangements of originals and covers, Skarlett has simply become more comfortable showing herself in the lights. She is currently gearing up to release her second album in the Fall of 2023.

Tapers notes: My first attempt at a Matrix recording, any feedback would be appreciated. I have also included a link to just the SBD recording for those who want it. There is a 30 second or so part in the intro where the sound is only coming out of the right channel, this is not a recording flaw, that's how it sounded at the venue as well. It's fixed quickly and isn't a problem the rest of the way. This show was also streamed live on YouTube and can be found here.

Tapers notes: Much better recording than my previous effort at this venue. Highlight of the show for me personally was "The Wayfaring Stranger". I had asked Skarlett at a previous show if she knew that song, and she wasn't that familiar with it. I said she should check it out and low and behold, she covers it here and does it beautifully. The comment at the end of the song about it not being 21 minutes long was for my benefit, as I had told her my favorite version was the almost 17 minute Tim Buckley version.

Tapers notes: Not a great recording unfortunately. I set up in front of Skarlett's normal stand up speaker, but I didn't realize she was going to use the venue speakers until it was too late. The results are the vocals are a tad distant, and the crowd noise is present throughout. I recorded here again in February and came away with a much cleaner recording, so this was a teaching moment.

She took a spot light in the 2022 Dylan Fest Songwriters Contest as one of the winning songs that evening. She is currently in the studio with Minneapolis Producer/Songwriter, Kevin Bowe, who has worked with- Jonny Lang, Etta James, Joe Cocker and many others, to release a single from that winning song, “Close To You (Braver These Days)" in the coming new year. And gearing up for a Sophomore album release in the Fall of 2023.

Tapers notes: I discovered Skarlett earlier in the year at the Bob Dylan Singer-Songwriter contest, and knew I had to see her again. She is a unique talent, she plays electric and acoustic guitar, but she also has a self made drum kit she plays with her feet (check out the pictures to see what I mean), and uses her voice as an instrument at times. She plays a mix of covers and originals, but a lot of these covers are so different from the original versions it becomes a really cool blend.
